Happy Birthday Hong Quan!!!
Unplanned and without even trying, I did 51mi. I’m telling you, you could’ve done it, Hong.
Natalie and I thought we were late for the start but we ended up getting there on time to find Hong messing with a flat front tire. He suspected the rim tape wasn't sealed and air was leaking out of the stem. So they threw in a tube that Andrew gave him. It was patched and it was leaking so they had to throw in a different tube that was good.
20 minutes behind schedule, we finally started only to have Wes hit a rock and getting a side cut not the far into Alpine Rd. That was another 10-ish minutes of them trying to boot it so they could throw a tube in.
The rest of the ride was incident free but because of the delays, we decided to head straight to Bici after OLH instead of doing Cañada as planned.
Descending Sand Hill from Portola, Andrew, Tim, and Catherine passed us on the aero, or more aero profile, bikes as we started to go up. Someone from behind, Hong maybe?, said the round tubers/Aethoses needed to go after them.
Natalie started to but Andrew and Tim were pulling away so I went in front to pull but I think her little leggies were tired from yesterday's ride so I bridged and Andrew pulled us way away from everyone else.
Unfortunately, the light after crossing 280 turned red on us and I thought that was going to be it for the uphill sprint. We got going and I figured we were going to just take it easy to Bici but Andrew was pulling and going faster so I thought, Why not? I'll sprint up the hill.
It's not quite the same having to start the sprint without momentum but I was at the back so I caught them off guard. I think they tried to come after me but I wasn't going to let anyone beat me to Bici.
I rode with Natalie home and was originally thinking of going to Apple Fritter for lunch but changed my mind and went Erik's instead. From there, it just seemed perfect to tack on some Redwood Shores gravel to finish off the ride.
