Tried to figure out a time to ride this with others but it just didn't work out so I went on my own.
I was very curious about the parking situation since they close at 6p. I assumed they were using the lot for the vista point but there's actually a gated lot that holds about 2 dozen cars just for the trail.
That being said, it was almost full and I parked in the vista lot that was also almost full. It holds about 2 dozen cars as well.
Still, while the trail was busy, it was only busy by Peninsula standards. There were still far less people than if this were Marin.
I was surprised that there isn't a bathroom at the trailhead or at the end of the trail either. There are bathrooms 2.5 and 5 mi. in from the bottom.
The trail itself is fine gravel and smooth with plenty of grip despite looking like loose over hard. I was surprised to find some muddy sections in the first 2.5 mi.
The first third of the trail, the views of the Bay are pretty and the highlight. But if it were foggy (with no views), there's not much interesting going on. I was also surprised by how steep sections of the trail were. For a new trail, I feel like there were plenty of opportunities to make it more gradual.
The trail does get better the higher you go. The second third, coastal oak trees appear and then for the last third, you're going into the redwoods. That was my favorite part of the trail.
At the moment the trail just ends abruptly and unceremoniously. I think until they open up access at the south end to Skyline and Purisima Creek Redwoods, I'm not sure how much I would ride this given all the other great trails nearby.
Other out-n-back trails that I think are more fun and interesting would be La Honda Creek and Cotoni-Coast Dairies.
One other thought about the trail. It feels like some of the corners are setup intentionally to slow you down vs. feeling flowy too.
Given how smooth the trail is right now, I think it’s very roadbikeable (for those with that comfort level). More so than Dirt Alpine for example. You would just be going slow on the way back down (which I wouldn’t want to do for Dirt Alpine).
UPDATE - This is a mystery to me. Now that I can see the gps data, I can see that the trail goes almost a mile past Purisima Creek. Right around where the 2nd bathroom is is where the exit to the Northridge parking lot should be. So I don't know why they spent all that time and money to extend the trail to "nowhere" rather than construct the connection to Purisima Creek. I do remember them saying something about having the trail connect (all the way) to Phleger Estate so maybe at some point this trail will get extended.
