Like it says up there -^ !!!
To be fair, I'd just discovered I'd lost the non-drive crank bolt, not catastrophically but it ended an otherwise enjoyable attempt at a 40k via the new Dixon Veloway, then the Yarra Punt and Beach Rd. So disappointed, more so by how unnecessarily up and down and up and down the veloway is!
The old route through the docks was noisier, but also flatter, way flatter. I reckon that's going to still be my route of choice. I don't mind hills, honestly, but on a "commuter", cyclist-only route? It's just a horseshit waste of money. Imagine how many roundabouts with bike, tram and pedestrian priority could be built for the money wasted on massive and unnecessarily complicated bridgeworks. This is "American" infrastructure in a city proud of "copenhagenising." (Something they're prouder of than they are good at actually achieving.) The car is still "god" in this land, and Melbourne's commitment to the car makes a laughing stock of the city's regular top 5 "livability index." We spend more money bribing the judges for that than we spend on cyclists and pedestrians.
Whinge over, crank bolt replaced, Loctite added to prevent it happening again. Might make another attempt at East Brighton to Yarra Punt to East Brighton tomorrow or Thursday, only next time, via the old Footscray Rd shared path. At least it's flat with a single, short climb at the turnoff towards Spotswood at Moreland St. Besides, lots of rail and shipping infrastructure to nerd out on. I'd rather an industrial view than barely any views at all and then only roads below.
