Anna Winlock was born on this date in 1857 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to astronomer Joseph Winlock and Isabella Lane. She attended the Cambridge Schools and developed an interest in mathematics and the Greek language. Her father was Director of the Harvard College Observatory and a professor of Astronomy at Harvard College. He encouraged her interest in observational astronomy. At age 12, she attended a solar eclipse expedition with her father in Kentucky. (That must have been awesome!) After graduating from secondary school, she became one of the first female paid staff members of the Harvard College Observatory.
She was of the first members of female computer group known as "the Harvard Computers," who became known for their high quality work, despite low wages and arduous hours. Later in her 30-year career, she made the most complete catalog of her era of stars near the north and south poles. She is also remembered for her calculations and studies of asteroids, in particular 433 Eros and 475 Ocllo.
Anna Winlock worked at the Harvard Observatory through the holidays in December 1903, making the last entry in her notebook on New Years Day. She died suddenly three days later, at age 46.

I had a brief, mild cold, but I felt recovered enough to ride today. I wanted some solid climbing, but I left late, so I stuck to familiar but challenging roads. I felt good, but not as strong as my recent rides.
For the first time, I rode the Coral-Evergreen-High Cycleway to the Tannery to cross the San Lorenzo River. Simpler and more pleasant than the corkscrew, and probably almost the same distance! I had never noticed the Cycleway. A friend pointed it out to me recently.
Today was my first day with new bike shoes! My second pair of Bontrager shoes were completely worn out, so I got the least expensive Shimanos on sale at Sports Basement, with the Tour de Fuzz discount on top. I took the time today to put the Time ATAC cleats on. The shoes and the cleats felt fine on the ride.
My first time up Redwood Drive in years. I thought it was public all the way to a plateau at the end, but maybe I'm remembering a different road. Today, I turned around at the "private" sign.
I rode down to Brommer for the return. Brommer, Arana Gulch, and Broadway are so much more pleasant than Soquel!
