I was going to do the Fat Cake San Rafael-Richmond Bridge Ribbon Cutting Ceremony ride but I didn't feel like waking up that early after waking up early to ride Friday morning.
Revolution Racing was having a ride a BBQ that started later and was close to home so it was a no-brainer. Plus I would get to ride with Christina and Doug. What I didn't realize was it was a recruitment ride so I felt like I was crashing it since I don't intend to race. But Brian didn't post about it on Slack and didn't mention the intent. I sort of talked Philip into doing the ride too.
We all met in Belmont and rode down to the start in Menlo Park. The start was very foggy and a bit cold.
It was a pretty big turnout. Everyone seemed nice. It was a nice chill pace most of the ride. We stopped at Moonside Cafe for some pastries.
It was on Purisima Creek Rd. when things started to get spicy. There were some gaps opening up and bridging each one just brought up the pace until we were full gas, Brian and I, going over the top of the front of the group.
I took it easy on Tunitas, letting the front group go. I rode up with Natalie for a while. Just after the grassy knoll this older guy goes flying by us. Shortly after that Natalie stopped so she could text her friend that she was going to be late. I continued on.
A second older guy passes me and since I was on my own now, I decided to jump on his wheel. I ask him if he’s with the guy ahead and if he’s trying to catch him. He says he is but doesn’t think he has the legs to do it. I realize I don’t have the legs to actually help him.
I let him go and eventually I hear another guy behind me. I ask him the same question. He says he is but it took everything to get on my wheel. I start to slowly ramp it up to pace him up to the second guy. Before we get up to him, the third guy sprints passed, thanks me, and catches the second guy. It was around a 50’ gap. Not sure why he did that because we were going to get him.
Almost immediately after catching the second guy, they slow down. The second guy was starting to cramp. He stopped at the side of the road.
The third guy continues on at a pretty good pace. I tried to catch him but I wasn’t making much ground and my legs were tired and a little crampy so I knew I couldn’t push much harder.
He stayed about 50-70’ in front of me until just before the start of the final sprint to the top of Tunitas. I got to about 20’ from him. I started to sprint and as I got up to his wheel, he turned around to see me and started to sprint with me.
I went by him and didn’t look back. I flew to the top from that point and even passed another random guy.
At the top, the third guy came by to fist bump me for the pull and the sprint. He told me he turned 60 a couple days ago. I wished him a Happy Birthday! :)
After that Philip, Natalie and I headed back while everyone waited for the final stragglers. I bombed Kings and then waited for them at the bottom. I didn't realize Philip was close to bonking along Sand Hill. I kept gapping them but eventually just slowed down.
The BBQ was fun and it was a teammate's birthday too. All and all a good day!

Best format for turn-by-turn directions on modern Garmin Edge Devices
Best format for turn by turn directions on Edge 500, 510. Will provide true turn by turn navigation on Edge 800, 810, 1000, Touring including custom cue entries. Great for training when we release those features. Not currently optimal for Virtual Partner.
Useful for uploading your activity to another service, keeping records on your own computer etc.
Useful for any GPS unit. Contains no cuesheet entries, only track information (breadcrumb trail). Will provide turn by turn directions (true navigation) on the Edge 705/800/810/1000/Touring, but will not have any custom cues. Works great for Mio Cyclo. Find GPS specific help in our help system.
