I was so worried about wearing just the right amount. What I wasn't prepared for was rain. It wasn't in the forecast but we got rained on three times during the ride - coming down from Planet of the Apes, on Cowell-Purisima Trail, and on Canada Rd at the end (which was the heaviest).
This route is a really chill gravel route but the rain and temperatures made it feel harder and more epic than it normally is. An uncharacteristic headwind heading south also didn't help.
The first part of the ride was really nice and sunny. Sweeney Ridge was great and the first part of the Baquiano Trail descent was really nice. Not too steep and fairly wide and smooth trail.
Then things got a little epic. On the map, I followed what looked like the trail. In practice, it looked like we turned off the trail onto single track that, with the rains, had rut down the middle and loose rocks. Parts of it were really steep. Comically steep. We did a lot of hiking. I'm thinking we probably took the wrong trail.
When we started climbing Planet of the Apes, the first drops of rain started and we could see ominous clouds in our path. At the top we stopped for a snack and when we got going again, it started to rain. It stopped somewhere on the way to Hwy 1.
We went to Caffe Mezzaluna for lunch. The pastrami sandwich was surprisingly good.
After lunch we took the bike path instead of Hwy 1 because it looked pretty empty. It was delightful!
Luckily Cowell-Purisima Coastal Trail was open. I wasn't sure if it would be or not since it's only open on holidays and weekends.
Along Purisima Creek Rd. we saw a rainbow and a buck dash across the road in front of us and then somehow snuck under a fence. I don't know how it manage to fit it's rack under without getting stuck.
Purisima Creek Trail was mostly really nice after the rain. It was almost like riding on pavement, it had been smoothed out that much. It was grippy too, making climbing easier. The only thing was the rains would make these piles of pine needles that were pretty bumpy. So it was either really smooth or jarring.
The ride also took longer than I anticipated so we were rushing to get back before sunset. And then because of the heavy rain, we were rushing to get out of that.
