Sunday. Chris Kinsey takes the lead. Cliff Jones, John Hare, Phil Hallewell, Liliane Rausch, Iain MacDonald, and I follow.
We proceed through familiar roads and tracks, through Uxbridge Common, Ickenham, Ruislip and Eastcote; up over Northwood Hills and down into Batchworth. We briefly join the tow path to Croxley Green, where we stop at the Croxley Cafe for refreshments.
Travelling north we pass Bucks Hill and stop briefly at Chipperfield. Phil and Liliane leave us for the Tennis Club, it is nearly 1pm after all. The rest of us continue. After Tower Hill, we begin to zig zag a bit towards Flaunden. Above Ley Hill, Chris has a puncture, or rather he has been aware of his front tyre getting soft and decides that he wants to do something about it before the climb out of the valley. Repair done, we are back on a northwesterly course through Ashley Green. At Heath End, the road forks, and Iain who is way ahead takes the road to Wigginton, which is not part of Chris's plan. I foolishly volunteer to catch Iain, on a hill, no chance. Having given up I rejoin the rest on the slightly less arduous climb to Grim's Ditch, followed by a gentle descent into the valley. Lunch is at The Kings Arms at Tring. Just before we arrive my phone starts ringing. Knowing who it is likely to be but not wanting to lose the group, I ignore it. Just as we are approaching the pub, Cliff's phone goes off. We find the culprit waiting for us. We are back to four now. (Forgot to mention John left us somewhere). It's a late lunch, nearly half past two when we get there. An hour or so later we are on the return leg.
Chris hands over the reigns to Cliff, who leads us back along the valley past Berkhamsted. Chris is by this time flagging a bit and elects to return home via Chipperfield. So Cliff Iain and I continue past Kings Langley to Watford. At Watford station, Cliff decides to catch a train. Iain and I continue along the Ebury Way, then the Grand Union Canal towpath back to Uxbridge. After eight bone crunching miles, I have never been so pleased to see the tarmac again. Iain catches his train at the station, presumably, and I continue home.
Weather warm and dry with occasional glimpses of the sun.
All the best..................Bernie
