Like the Santa Cruz gravel ride from a couple weeks ago, it was supposed to be freezing at the start and warm in the afternoon. And like that ride, even though the thermometer read 16C/61F, it definitely still felt cold. I was dressed prepared to shed layers but no layers were shed.
I get maybe a flat a year. This weekend I got 2 1/2 flats! 3 technically. One yesterday, two today. More on that later.
We wanted to do a chill ride so we headed down to Morgan Hill. We did most of the climbing at the beginning of the ride but it's mostly flat.
On the way up Pierce Rd., Bob was pushing but started to slow when we were almost at the top so I told him to keep going. Then climbing up Kennedy Rd., Bob was working pretty hard while I was just chilling next to him. He asked me how I could climb without breathing (hard). I told him, "Eating lots of pastries. And butter!" :)
Doug split off at the Calero Reservoir. He didn't want to climb McKean and didn't want to have to climb it on the way back. Little did he know the rest of the ride was flat. He should've stayed. Bob pushed again on McKean. He was starting to slow near the top. I was about to tell him to go again but we were passing a dude and I wanted to wait until after. As soon we passed him, Bob shut it down and pulled aside so it was just me to the top.
At lunch, while trying to put something in my jersey pocket, I pushed my phone out of my vest pocket and it crashed onto the ground. Miraculously, it landed flat on it's back. So no scratches, cracks or dents. Amazing!
After lunch, we weren't keen to head back out. That's where my Garmin read 16C/61F but it felt colder. That's also where I discovered my front tire was flat! Yesterday it was my rear!
We made the GREAT decision to take Coyote Creek Trail back. It was our own bike highway. Barely anyone else on it, it was super pleasant.
After we got off the trail and back on to the surface streets, I noticed my rear tire felt soft. Sure enough it had a slow leak with about 20 miles to go. I didn't have another tube so we pumped it up and road on it until it was low again. I think I had to stop to pump it a total of 4 times before getting home. Bob kept saying just another "3 miles", "4 miles", "5 miles". :)
I got my replacement Garmin Edge 820 yesterday. It didn't have 100% charge but I also didn't think we were doing this long a ride today. I ended up having to turn on Battery Save Mode and had 2% left at the end.
Also bad, I only had 2 bottles today! Yikes!
