From the station I went down to the sea and took the National Route N 135 to Shimoda 下田, the only road following the coastline. It stays high on the cliff, with beautiful views over the coast and the sea, but riding is spoilt by heavy traffic.
At Ito 伊東 I left the coast and climbed up the hills following an old road numbered 59. The beginning is steep then the gradient gets milder. Very peaceful climbing with no traffic, through citrus tree (amanatsu 甘夏?) terraces, bamboo groves and forest, with nice views over the hills and the little cone of Omuroyama大室山 looking like an upside down rice cup. I reached without much effort the Hiekawa Pass 冷川峠 (about 360 mt.) and went down along a beautiful little valley toward the middle of Izu Peninsula 伊豆半島.
When I reached the Kano River狩野川I followed a riverside walking/cycling path that avoids the towns of Shuzenji 修善寺 and Oohito 大仁, with the river on the left and an elevated expressway on the right. At the confluence with another side valley, I turned right and went up the valley towards east on road N. 19 leaving on my back the town of Oohito 大仁. This is another busy road, connecting the cities of Numazu 沼津and Ito 伊東. About 5 km up from Ohito 大仁, where is a kind of a park, I found indications for Atami 熱海 on a minor road numbered 135 and turned left. This one instead was another nice and quiet country road. It goes down to a village then merges with the N. 80 and climbs up again to the Yamabushi Pass 山伏峠 (about 510 mt.), with some steep segments. A toll road called Izu Skyline 伊豆スカイライン crosses the pass in north-south direction. The downhill from the pass towards the coast for the first 3 Km or so is exhilarating: fast and scenic. The road is wide, allowing full speed, with great views towards the open sea. Then it twists with a series of turns and all of a sudden gets very narrow.
The last 7 Km back to Atami 熱海were again on the busy route 135.
