Superb gradient double-track climb up to 44 trails area from Dufur. This rarely visited section of Springer Mill & Springer Ridge roads graduate from wide gravel on the open buttes, to narrow, lightly sandy double track, at first in the oaks, then pines and then the taller conifers that like more water. At times there may be tree fall or a wash down the center of the tracks. But easy climbing with 50mm tires, set to a low pressure. Springer Ridge road becomes NFSD 2730 and after intersecting Cold Springs Road (the first paved road in awhile), there is a view eastward at a set of cliffs, at least partially overlooking Badger Creek Wilderness.
A sharp turn at Fifteen Mile Camp is a great rest area with an upscale outhouse. It is essentially all downhill from here. On the first section, Cedar Creek trail runs the ridge (not really even close to Cedar Creek). It was completely cleared of extensive winter downfall this week (5/31/2020) and is a sweet descent, getting steep toward the intersection back with Fifteen mile creek. There are beautiful meadows for a picnic. Several look out northward with views of Mt. Adams. Near the bottom of this upper section, the ridge is a knife ridge with views off both sides.
While most riders turn and head uphill on Fifteen Mile Creek trail, it is delightful and quiet to head downhill on this second section. At times the vine maples and other brush nearly occlude the trail. Fifteen Mile Creek remains close by. This is a low gradient downhill section. After following the creek, it moves slightly up onto the side of the north ridge into the oak forest and the trail has a drop off to the right.
The intersection with North South road can be a little confusing. Head uphill rather than down hill as the maps I have suggest to reach the third section. This is Upper Fifteen mile road. There is the occasional 4 wheel drive vehicle here. There are two fords of Fifteen mile. In Spring they have been up to the bottom of my shorts, but still easily crossed. A middle section drops into the side of the creek.
Finally, coming out onto paved road again is a quick easy push back to. Dufur.
