An easy approach up a gentle grade from Dufur on Forest Service Road 44. Low traffic and nicely paved. The turn onto Lookout Mountain Trail enters a pine forest ravaged by beetle kill. After the winter, there were about 40-50 trees lying across the trail along Eight Mile Creek between 44 and the junction with 4420 at Eight mile meadow. Eight Mile Point is a beautiful rock outcropping and the dead trees actually open the view up to the north. One could easily choose to take 4420 to avoid this portion of the downfall. Descending into Fifteen Mile Creek, the forest turns more lush. Again though, downfall slows the otherwise flowing descent. I estimate there are 40-50 trees down between the top and the lower intersection with Cedar Creek Trail. Some of these trees are massive and their fall took down other trees creating some impressive tangles to navigate through. The standing trees are magnificent and the ecosystems change throughout the descent. Ancient pines, groves of Cedar, open meadows with vistas across the valley are a few of the features.
