I needed an excuse to go to Donut Savant so I put together a gravel route exploring mostly new trails. Emily and Noah were game for some cronuts and gravel exploring.
We ate some donuts before starting the ride. I brought along a couple cronuts for the ride, one for dessert after lunch and one for the trail but I ended up eating it when we got back to the car.
It was cold and windy but sunny and clear and I think I was properly dressed for it. When we weren't moving and there wasn't any wind, it was actually pretty warm. Just that winter wind chill to really make it feel colder than it should just by looking at the temperature alone.
I'm really happy that I routed this ride the way I did. Descending W. Ridge at the beginning was way better than I think climbing it would've been. It's really uneven and technical and pretty long.
The bumpy descent wasn't great for my wrist either. It felt fine on my Tarmac but the Thesis hoods are angled differently and the only comfortable position for my wrist meant I wasn't really on the hoods and I had to reach for the brakes. This was the beginning of the ride, basically, and I was worried it would get worse but luckily it went away sometime before Wildcat Canyon, I think.
Climbing Canyon, while steep, wasn't so bad since it's smooth. Most of the trails weren't that smooth though. Either rocky or rutted from water run-off. Most of the trails on the Peninsula seemed to have been maintained and ruts have been filled and the trails have been graded and smoothed.
Along Skyline, Grizzly Peak and the ridge, we had gorgeous views as the sky was crisp and clear. Seaview trail was especially nice with great views on both sides of the ridge. We also got to hang out with a herd of cows for a bit.
We had lunch at Barney's Burgers where it was warm in the sun. But as soon as we got going again, the wind chill made it feel cold again. That cold didn't last very long as we had a big climb all the way back up to Grizzly Peak.
Sibley felt a little like being in Arizona and different from the other parks. Once we got back to Redwood Regional and Joaquin Miller, the light filtering through the trees was gorgeous. Might have been the highlight of the ride.
