The weather forecast indicated it would be very cold up at the top of this climb, so I started much later than Ken Mathis's small group. They were leaving at 8AM, and I planned originally to leave an hour later to get there around noon, There was a thought that we might all get there at about the same time, but when I checked the forecast again after waking up, it was going to be even colder, and I had to start searching for serious cold weather gear, which wasted almost an hour, Not just locating it, but figuring out how I was going to carry it all. So, I started at about 10:34, and realized I would just see them in passing as they were headed back, so I took a failry liesurely pace on the way up. I also stopped twice to take pictures of the valley below. I wanted to get a picture of the sun hitting the snow dusted trees on the ridgeline at the top of the canyon, but waited too long and that entire area no longer had any direct sunlight. In fact, I caught a few snow flakes near the top, but they disappeared on contact. Excpet for my finger tips, I was reasonably OK as I reached the cafe, and thought about just throwing on the rain jacket I brought and heading down before I started to get chilled. But, part of my purpose was to put everything on as a test run for winter riding in colder or more inclement conditions this year, so I stripped down to my socks and shorts and put everything on. I was quite chilled by the time I was done, but my upper half was warm enough. My legs were a little cold, but OK. My feet were cold but not painfully so. The temps went from a high of 60F well into the canyon, to 34F at the cafe. The temp increase was 20 degrees with 30 min of descent, so a quick turnaround at the top before getting chilled can be done, but isn't much fun.
