I made a rookie mistake this morning beside getting to the venue late and in a rush I had two frozen water bottles for post ride recovery drinks and had two bottles for the ride. Yes, I grabbed one ride bottle and one frozen bottle. The group I was supposed to start with left 40 min before me. I thought they left only 15-20 min before me. The temps were started in the upper 70's but felt much warmer and was humid and semi windy. I busted my butt trying to catch Janilsa and her group before the first Rest stop. I finished my water bottle way before I got there with the other one still frozen, I stopped long enough to check for the group with no luck, I couldn't use the porta potty or get water because the lines were too long, Away I raced went looking for the the group. I finally make it to the 2nd rest stop already cramping,, I don't know what the temp or humidity was but it was getting the best of me... I telling myself when you catch up with the group you will be able to recovery because the pace will be 16-17 mph. Well, after getting to the rest stop I need to use the porta potty and fill up my water bottles. I see Janilsa and the told her what was about to do. I filled up my bottles and was heading to the potty and was told the group was about to leave and they would stop on route so I could relieve myself. Away we go and the first thing I notice was this pace is no 16-17 mph and recovery was out of the window. I stayed as relaxed as I could keeping the cramps under control the best I could, we finally get to Hill Road a series of nice steep climbs... the first climb my legs locked up on me everything from my feet up to my butt, I knew this was going to be brutal, That was an under statement, i was hurting so bad I felt like I could walk faster, I hung on as long as I could but got dropped. To my surprise they waited for me at the end of these climbs. This was the first of a few times I got dropped and each time they waited. I hated that I was slowing up the group I gave it my all but the cramps were major league. I kept hoping with the increase in fluid intake and all the electrolytes that the cramps would stop, for a a short bit they seemed to get better until we hit another climb. At the 3rd rest stop I could hardly walk but I was not giving up... for some reason I thought we were at 78 miles and pepping myself up I can do this, to realize it was 68 miles so I shifted my mindset it is only 32 miles! We finally make it to the last rest stop, I looked so bad the counter workers were concerned about me. they even went and got me a chair to sit on. They asked if I needed sag to come get me. I said I can do 10 miles, even other riders were trying to give me advise from what to take to getting a ride! I had already done most of their suggestions except for drinking mustard, that was a new one, One of the counter ladies went got me a bottle, but politely declined. It was only 10 miles how bad can that be? It was the longest 10 miles I could remember, but at this point my memory was the least of my concerns, I dug as deep as I could, one by one the miles came down and no one was happier than me! I wasn't ready to do a 100 miler much less at this pace, but I was very happy I did it. 1.84 miles of the ride includes the ride to and back to my car which did at about 10 mph or less.
