I awoke after a good night's sleep to find my front tire was flat, and that I had another fire reroute to plan.
I quickly pulled out the tube, found a stubborn leak with the help of sink water, and repatched a failed patch. It held great the rest of the day.
I looked at the overall wildfire map and found that another large fire was on both sides of a road way out in the boonies, on my route. So I needed to figure out a way around, here in the hotel while I had Wifi. I was still good to go to Silver Lake and Crescent, but southwest of there was going to be major divergence. I ended up planning it pretty quickly using ridewithgps's wonderful heatmap feature, which allows me to see very plainly which roads and trails cyclists use more than others. I finished it pretty quick but I had never been able to get a route over to my Garmin from my phone before. But I figured it out after a quick Google. Just use the Garmin connect app. That worked brilliantly and I finally left the hotel at 8:30.
The smoke was a bit worse but tolerable. I diverted around the highway for a few miles near town but soon had no alternative so I had to ride the highway. Traffic was low but of course high speed with lots of trucks. Not ideal but I didn't have much choice. I didn't carry as much water because I had very evenly spaced stops. A little rest area just off the highway around 25mi. Then the town of Paisley, where I got a drink and snack at 50 miles. Then Summer Lake at 78 miles. I stopped at a faucet and picnic table at the wildlife refuge headquarters. There was also a store but I didn't go in. And finally around mile 100 was Silver Lake which had a little general store. So I was set on stores today.
The firefighters home base and camp was just outside of Silver Lake. A lot of the traffic today was related to the fire. I read a story that people have come to help with the Bootleg fire from as far away as Alaska and Puerto Rico.
So after loading up on water to dry camp, I left town and found some random public land a few miles out of town to camp.
