I was supposed to do "Pamo's Birthday" ride w/Fatcake today but once again, it was another terrible AQI Saturday. Most of the Bay Area was orange or red. Only the city and the coast were green.
Raymond said the air quality was good and the ride was still on. I don't know where he was looking because Marin was deep orange and red up on Mt. Tam.
As much as I wanted to go, the AQI appeared to be trending worse, not better, as the morning went on.
So I went to Plan B and rode some easy gravel on the coast and did some new trail recon in Rancho Corral de Tierra. Some good stuff.
Originally, I was going to go all the way up to Mori Point and I kept waffling about it. At the top of Planet of the Apes, I ran into Ringo, Jimmy, and Shanna, who was leading this Rapha ride up PoA. And then at the bottom of Mile Trail, I ran into Mike and Maya.
We stopped and chatted for a while, catching up. I figured I'd turn around and ride with them rather than continue to Mori Point (where they started).
On the way back I showed them some new trails including the ones in Rancho Corral de Tierra. They had a time constraint but I talked them into having lunch at Dad's Luncheonette. The sweet, Peaches and Cream, was amazing. There was a very familiar taste that we couldn't identify. It was right there on the tip of my tongue. Also ran into Mike Munrow at lunch. I was seeing all the friends!
After lunch, they had to head back. I decided to do Cowell-Purisima Coastal Trail. I thought about loop back on Purisima and Higgins but I've never down Cowell-Purisima going north so I decided to try it.
The switchback section that descends into a gully (Whale Bone Beach), on the climb back out on the south side, they've put down new gravel that's not very well packed down. Climbing wasn't too bad but on the way north, descending it, it was loose and a bit tricky.
Overall, a really fun day with great weather - just perfect, while it was scorching everywhere else.
