I had no trouble sleeping even with the Canadian Pacific main line just down the road from me. I saw at least 5 trains go by in the span of an hour just before sunset and the whistle was quite loud each time. Thankfully either no trains went by all night or I slept through.
I quickly got going and actually rode away not long after 8am. Soon I was in Lethbridge. I stopped at a little grocery store on the edge and got a few things. I dawdled so much that I had the liberty of going to an actual outdoor store for a new fuel canister, since it was after 10am and everything was open. I picked a small one that was close. The neighborhoods I rode through to get there were beautiful and while the parks I found were nice I didn't see any bathrooms or water fountains or a faucet even. No matter I thought, I will run across something.
I grabbed my fuel and went on my way, surely some other park will have something. Nope. I went by at least 5 parks, proper ones, and nothing. The people of Lethbridge have evolved to not need water to drink nor a pot to pee in. I was rather a bit more peeved than yesterday with Fort Macleod. That place had the excuse of being small. But Lethbridge is huge. What gives?Perhaps I am losing my touch at finding free water in all these unfamiliar towns? I don't think so. It's just a crappy place. With people who let their city government get away with providing substandard parks. No place you'd want to spend more than an hour.
I pushed on and eventually went to a Safeway and bought water. So stupid.
It took forever to get through Lethbridge, and I never even really had the chance to actually sit and eat and drink something. I pushed on to Taber and grabbed a quick snack and sat at a park. They actually had bathrooms here which was nice because my faith in Alberta was gone after the previous two towns. I rode on through some pretty thick and loose gravel to Grassy Lake. I ended up doing the last few miles on the highway just to get it over with. It had a nice shoulder and was fast with the wind in my favor. I should have been here a long time ago. The day looked on paper to be extremely easy. Mostly flat and downhill with a tailwind. But I messed around in Lethbridge so long and a lot of the gravel was really loose. But I made it and it was still pretty early.
I pulled into the town campground which is actually pretty nice. It's behind a baseball field and there are tons of sites but nobody here. I paid a reasonable fee and setup my camp. I even have an outlet! And good water nearby. And a washroom as they are called here. Faith in humanity rising...
