I slept ok despite a few teenagers who drove up and used the swings near me right as I was going to bed. Thankfully they left after about an hour and I actually fell asleep a couple times before they even left. A few random cars drove through the park in the middle of the night but it wasn't as bad as it could have been, Saturday night and all.
The morning was pretty mild today and the wind wasn't bad. It was nice breaking camp without worrying about stuff blowing away. I grabbed a couple things at the grocery store and headed off. I was able to get on the old highway right away and then actually bypass even that in the Boudoin National Wildlife Refuge. I took part of a curvy gravel road that looped around a big lake, and then jumped back on the old highway.
The wind was not as strong as the past few days but it was pretty much directly behind me so the riding today was very fast and easy. Most of my highway sections had big shoulders.
I took a gravel detour soon after my first town of Saco, and I ended up stopping at a nice little store in Hinsdale for a snack around noon. I soon turned off again on gravel and rode through a ghost town called Vandalia on the Milk river and by the railroad. There was an old school and an old post office, and a couple houses. In front of the school was an old bike that had a truck steering wheel welded onto the stem. Next town of Tampico had a historical marker but not much of anything else. It told of boom times as homesteaders moved in in the early 20th century, only to leave soon after they figured out how hard it is to farm here.
I rolled fast into a large regional town, Glasgow, where I filled up on fluids and food for a long carry in case the next town of Fort Peck had nothing.
Fort Peck, turned out to not have a store open in Sunday but I had plenty anyway so I rolled on. The official Army Corps campgrounds looked full and I wanted to camp alone anyway. I knew from my maps that tons of public lands were on the other side of the lake. So I climbed a steep hill to get onto the huge dam spillway, and there were a couple of nice overlooks along the way. Apparently Fort Peck dam was built during the New Deal and had more workers than any other project at that time. It's the fifth largest artificial lake in the US. The Missouri river. Also of note is that it flows north here.
So I rode on down the road to the east side of the lake and found a nice little spot hidden from the road on a small pond dam for cattle water. On the edge of the Army Corps property and some state lands. There are actually some small trees here to block what little wind is left in the evening. Have a great view of the lake and sunset.
