I barely set up my camp in time yesterday before the rain came. I figured it would be short lived and light. But it kept on for the better part of 3 hours with only a couple pauses. Actually steady at times, although never really hard by Georgia standards. I went to sleep early because I was exhausted. When I finally woke and looked at the inside of the rain fly and saw beads of water still on it, I was confused. Until I tried to open the zipper and I found that it had frozen so fast that everything was hard with the last layer of rain. Crazy. The sky was clear though and wind relatively light. I was surprised that I slept so well and so warm. I didn't even wear socks.
I decided to let the sun warm up my frozen gear so I could put it away. So I delayed a bit but still got going well before 10am. The gravel road I had to take was soft but thankfully had plenty of rock and so it was passable. Good thing I wasn't approaching from the east side, as those were dirt roads, impassable when wet, even by truck.
It didn't take me that long before I got to the little town of Elkwater on a little lake at high elevation, and tucked under a thick grove of trees. The wind was howling at over 25mph, with gusts way over that. Unfortunately the lake access for the town faced that direction, so it was brutally cold to sit even in the sun. I stopped at the first bathroom I saw by the lake and filled my bottles in the bathroom. In anticipation of about 100 miles to the border and 130 before the next town, I filled more than yesterday. I tried the little camp grocery store next to the visitor center but it was closed. Thankfully there's a small gas station that's open everyday. They didn't have much but it was better than the selection of Grassy Lake. I bought a bunch of stuff and more liquids. I found a decent wind sheltered spot next to the lake to eat a sort of brunch.
I left via a bike path that I noticed earlier on the way in, that took me by the lake back to the entrance road. Thankfully I caught a break today as my route trended east southeast and the wind was west northwest. Right from Elkwater I had a big steep climb on pavement. Probably really busy during peak. But this is clearly after peak as almost nobody was there. Perhaps the weather contributed as well.
I rolled on a high exposed ridgeline for awhile and stopped for a nice overlook. It was a bit scary descending with the wind at my side, so I was careful. The road turned to gravel and undulated. I passed a marker that explained that the main ridge of the park is the divide between the rivers and streams that flow north to Hudson Bay(behind me now) and those that flow south to the Missouri, and ultimately to the Gulf of Mexico. Really cool.
I crossed into Saskatchewan on a really pretty densely wooded hard packed dirt road. I went by the HQ for this side of the park, and a couple small but nice campgrounds. Unfortunately not far enough on the edge of the park for me. So I continued on, and the road, still dirt and not even gravel but dry now thankfully, went straight up the hill. Long sections of 12-15%. In Saskatchewan. A province that most people think of as being as stereotypically flat as Kansas. Like Kansas, it ain't all flat.
I am amazed at how fast the weather has changed here. Yesterday and today is effectively like the dead of winter weather in Georgia. Crazy. I'm glad to be heading south tomorrow. I had no chance at making it to the border today before it closes at 5pm, and since it's all just private farmland all the way there from the park, I decided to make it a short day and spend another night in Canada in a new province. I found a spot off in the edge of a dense forest that's really nice but even this tucked away in the trees, the wind is still insane.
Tomorrow I head south off the mountain and about 55 miles of Canada before I reach the border and I'll be back in the USA! And then 30 more miles to my next town of Havre in Montana.
