The sky cleared last night and stayed that way and the morning warmed up fast. I took my time making my way back through the park to try to take it all in. Views were incredible. I dropped off my payment for the night and worked my way through town. I downloaded some more podcasts at the library, and decided I didn't need anything from a store that couldn't wait till the middle of the day.
I rode the I-94 frontage road till it dead ended, then I hoisted the bike and myself over the short fence and joined the highway. I rode the almost deserted interstate to the next exit where I got on another parallel road. I had to ride on I-94 one more brief time and it passed without issue. I rolled into the tiny town of Wibaux, MT and checked out some pretty cool metal art and ultimately decided to wait for the next town to stop at a store.
I rode some steep rollers on red dirt roads east towards the state line. I crossed the line at a curve in the road, on some really, really bad washboard. I did at least get a county line sign so I snapped a pic of that. I rolled into Beach expecting a tiny grocery store but found a full size Dollar General. Sweet. Met a local on a fixie who said he was waiting out Covid there in his hometown and wanted to go back to Denver to get back to being a bike messenger.
I found water at a park and rode away from town into the open prairie with a severe crosswind. And the terrain was quite rolling as well. Along the way I passed a few planted rows of shelterbelt trees and they definitely made a difference and blocked the wind for a bit. I only had 40 miles or so from Beach to my goal but I really got pooped and lost energy for the last 20 miles. I really enjoyed the scenery though. A few miles south of Golva there was a lot of National Grassland and the vastness of the natural grass prairie was stunning. I could have camped almost anywhere but I had a goal in mind and just kept plugging away.
Eventually I arrived at the Little Missouri river, on national grassland property, and scrambled down by the water. I am really glad I kept pushing to make it here because it was totally worth it, one of the most beautiful campsites of the trip
