The wind calmed down in the evening and I slept fantastic under the trees. It was utterly silent all around me, just like the previous night in the park. It did get down to around freezing but warmed up quickly once the sun rose. I put on a bunch of my clothes for the descent off the mountain towards the prairie but I almost boiled when finishing the rest of the climb back up with the wind at my back.
Once I got to the ridge the wind stung hard and I was glad again to have way too many clothes on. The descent was steep and had really sharp switchbacks. It didn't last that long and I was again in prairie, a hilly one though, but devoid of trees. I turned into the wind and settled in for a long Battle the rest of the day. The pavement ran out and became gravel, which worried me a bit as this was supposed to be a Provincial road that led to the border.
I decided to turn off and follow my route which took me off what I thought was a main road. They were minimum maintenance roads but actually dry and smooth. Somewhere in here a random black lab from out of nowhere adopted me and began following me along as I fought the wind through open range with cows all over. He chased country cats we ran across, and gave a terrific chase to a passing deer. I kept thinking he would eventually get tired or bored of me because he really didn't seem all that interested in me, just running for the sake of running. I had to stop to remove clothing and the dog stopped to take a breather in the middle of the road. He was wearing a collar but no tag. Of course even if I had a number to call I couldn't because my phone doesn't work in Canada, and even if it did I was in the middle of nowhere, probably with no service anyway. I felt bad for him. He followed me a bit longer but after a while I looked back and he was gone.
I continued on to the border and reached a paved east west road that went to Alberta. My road went straight and was paved and had proper signs. So I proceeded and reached the border after a few more miles.
The officials there couldn't have cared less about my trip or me, and let me go after asking only a couple questions. It took less than 5 minutes. I felt great and only had 35 more miles to town and it was early in the day. But the headwind increased as I approached Havre, and I kept getting slower and more tired. I had plenty of water at the border but eventually actually ran out a couple miles from town. The temperature was really warm compared to the last few days, mid seventies. It felt great.
About 10 miles from town I got cell service again and booked a hotel room for the night. I grabbed groceries before checking in because the hotel was 2 miles away from town. Up a hill and into the wind. But I get a shower tonight in my home country again!
