Bob was still not feeling great so Sonny and I were on orders to take it easy.
The day started off a little bit on the wrong foot and sort of continued that way throughout the day.
When Sonny arrived, he had a slow leak in his rear tire. He's running tubeless but I guess he didn't top off the sealant because by the time we got to Alpine Inn, his tire was low again.
We made it to Robert's where he added some sealant after struggling to unplug the cap on his sealant bottle. Somehow, his tire managed to unseat so he couldn't pump air in with either his mini pump or Bob's frame pump. Luckily I had CO2 with me. He wasn't used to my nozzle and did a test blast at me and released a decent amount but there was enough left to seat his tire and fill it up.
Shortly after leaving Robert's, and on Portola Valley Rd., I was in front and a bird landed on the road about 20' in front of me. It was facing towards the shoulder. It just sat there as I approached and I could also hear a car behind us. I started to brace for the worst, expecting it to fly in to me but it continued to sit there after I passed. Then I heard a thud. Apparently the bird took off but then got hit by the car.
Lots of bad, and maybe aggro, drivers today that passed unnecessarily close which isn't normal.
On the way up OLH, we were passed by many riders from the same group or team but I couldn't make out their name.
I thought about riding the Thesis because I knew we'd be taking it easy and it has lower gearing but I was lazy. Climbing slowly on a 28t is not as easy as a 42t. :)
As we started our descent of 84, that big group came flying passed us. I thought about jumping on the train but wasn't really sure I wanted to mix it up with such a big group of randos that seemed to be going hard. I waited until the end of the train went by and my plan was to hop on to the back. Sonny and Bob were ahead of me and it didn't look like Bob was going to jump on so I didn't bother. But then he started to speed up but Sonny and let a gap open up so I sprinted passed him. When I got on to Bob's wheel, he let off the gas and the let the group go. I thought about bridging the gap but what was the point if none of the other guys were on the train with me.
Then Sonny decided to try and catch them, thinking maybe Bob just needed some motivation. They were pretty far ahead by now and I thought it was too late and it was. After a few turns, they were gone.
There was a decent headwind on Hwy. 84 which was unexpected and there was some cold patches when it was supposed to be pretty nice. We could also see that there was fog at the coast which wasn't in the forecast either. It was foggy in spots but Dad's was sunny and clear.
At the south end of downtown HMB, they're doing construction on Hwy. 1. The pavement was scraped in preparation for new asphalt and it was quite bumpy. It reminded me the Paris-Roubaix cobbles.
When we ordered, Bob got chips and I managed to get the last order of chips which meant Sonny didn't get any. It took a really long time for Sonny and I to get our orders, while Bob got his pretty quickly. I think it was because Bob was the one to actually get the last order and they instead fried up some tortilla chips for me instead. They were good but they had a sour, spicy, seasoning on them that I didn't really care for. I would've preferred just salt.
From lunch onward, it got warmer and warmer. We took it easy up Higgins but on Lobitos, I decided to push to try and open up my legs. They really didn't feel that great but did feel better once I was at the top. The rest of the way, I started to feel sleepy and really didn't feel like moving.
On Tunitas, Sonny and I took it easy, while Bob took it even easier. We waited for him at the grassy knoll which was good because on the rest of the way up Tunitas, Bob got a front flat. One of the patches on his tube started to leak. At that point I was quite sleepy and really looking forward to descending Kings to wake up.
We got to the top of Tunitas and there was a fire truck blocking the top of Kings. There was an accident. The fireman suggested taking the dirt trail that isn't bike legal down to the archery range as that would bring us down below the accident. As much as I would've loved to have poached the trail, I didn't think it was a good idea on our road bikes. That meant we had to do more climbing to get to Hwy. 84. No one wanted that.
Of course, I got stuck behind traffic descending 84. Luckily Portola Rd. was open so we wouldn't have to detour all the way to Robert's in Woodside.
The rest of the way was mostly uneventful with a couple of fun sprints that helped my legs feel better.
Mostly it was just really stiflingly hot in the valley. I'm feeling the heat the most right now.
