We had the most perfect weather for today's ride. Unfortunately, I didn't have the most perfect legs or fitness. Thanks to be really busy at work, I just haven't been riding enough. So I was leading the ride from the back.
We had time before we had to get to the start so I took Emily up Headbanger's Ball #1. Probably not the best trail to warm up on as it's steep and technical. :)
When we got to Skyline Quarry Gate, the lock was facing inward and jammed so I could rotate it out. Several people tried and failed. In the end, Emily reached in with her phone to take pics of the combo and then I would reach in and change it by feel until I got it open.
We had clear views all around the entire time. Pretty lucky for everyone that was able to make it for the ride.
The rider were so spread out because of the differences in speed but I was constantly surprised by people that were behind that I thought were in front.
After leaving Fifield-Cahill, things got even more spread out and people starting yeeting in their own directions instead of following my route. On Baquiano Trail, a group took the harder, MTB, trail and Ben hit a rut, burped his tire and crashed. After we got him sorted, Ben and John took the MTB line again. ie. steep, loose and straight down. so Joshua crashed. Luckily, they were both fine.
Planet of the Apes was pretty uneventful except, I thought Emily and I were at the back. Turns out Catherine and Riley were behind us. When we got to the top, we had to decide whether to stick to the plan of doing Old Colma Rd. singletrack or take the easier Old San Pedro Mtn. Rd down. John had a time constraint so he was taking the fastest way. We had eaten up a lot of time earlier so for the sake of getting to lunch most of us opted for going straight down. Catherine ended up taking the shortcut onto San Pedro Mtn. Trail so didn't meet up with us. Joshua really wanted to try the singletrack so he and Riley went to meet Catherine.
On the way down, through that section that's really beat up by roots pushing up, I was bombing down and I bunny hopped them but I guess I didn't clear it and came down hard on an edge. I looked back to see something fly into the bushes. Joe was behind me and told me I had a puncture in the rear tire which I didn't realize right away. Luckily this week I was swapping tires and realized the wheels needed sealant. The tire sealed quickly hardly loosing any air.
It turns out it was my rear light that flew off. I have no idea how it managed to yeet off my bike. It was ziptied to the seat rails and it just shredded them like nothing.
At the bottom we waited for the singletrackers for a while. Eventually we got going because everyone was antsy to get going.
Everyone wanted to just blast down Hwy 1. to Dad's. They were worried the bike path would be crowded but it wasn't. It was the road that was jammed with pumpkin seekers. I personally would've preferred the peace and quiet of the path to the road noise from the cars.
Dad's took a while but it was delicious and everyone enjoyed it. They were especially psyched that they carried a coffee from Chicago, Dark Matter Coffee, not found anywhere in the Bay Area. It's a cold brew that was apparently delicious. Joe bought four cans of it and spent a while trying to fit it all into his bar bag. :)
By the time we got to Purisima Creek Rd., I was lagging and off the back. It was clear, Purisima Creek Trail was the only way up as the other two are much steeper and harder.
As it was, I was crawling up and had twinges in my calves but luckily no cramps. It was much cooler than the last time I climbed it and nearly got heat stroke.
When I got home, I was pretty rekt. My muscles were sore in a way that I can't really describe.
