The rain held off all night and there wasn't even any mist as I broke camp in very warm morning air. I rode a series of gravel roads that were recently graded and loose like a lot of yesterday. The wind was very light from the east-southeast again.
I was going pretty good if a bit fatigued, and randomly in the middle of a nice gravel road I ran across something that caused sealant to spray out my rear tire. It was a sharp rock I guess, as the hole was pretty small and sealant was very close to being able to stop the leak on its own. I plugged it and it held great, topped it off with a bit of air and rolled away, total time like 2 minutes.
No sooner than I was beginning to look forward to getting into town and a rest, I got a puncture on the front. I had turned onto a very short highway section into the little town of New Hartford, and just before I turned off my tire started going down. I limped it I to a Casey's parking lot and put a new tube in there. It was an extremely tiny piece of straw or.a thorn or something. An good tube and 250 pumps and I was back in business. It was definitely time for new tires and thankfully that was today's goal.
I made it to Cedar Falls soon after and rolled up to Bike Tech, a shop that's in a beautiful former old post office building. They didn't have exactly the tire I had in mind, but had some similar Specialized Pathfinder Pro tires in a 42 millimeter width. I had been riding Maxxis Rambler 45 mill. But these were certainly better than my old worn out ones. I grabbed some rim tape, sealant and a CO2 cartridge and fitting. They let me use the behind the building area which was a nice low stress environment to get everything changed over. The rain and mist held off and the temperature was around 70. I got the rear on and it popped onto the bead immediately once I screwed on the CO2. I put a couple more rounds of tape on the front and just barely got the tire on, and it almost seated with the remaining bit in the first cartridge. I screwed on a full one and it popped on right away as well. Air seeped out from the dent in the rim, I wiggled the tire around a bit and it mostly stopped and held air for awhile without sealant. I put sealant inside both tires and successfully got the rear aired up with just my hand pump, and the front was slightly trickier but went on also after the sealant stopped the bead from leaking at the dent. I shook it around vigorously and it seems to be holding good. Should have set it up tubeless when leaving Portland. I honestly didn't think it would work. Orange seal is amazing.
While doing all this I had a little audience of a customer who had rode over to get some gloves and we chatted about my trip and tubeless tires while I worked and cleaned up my mess. I thanked the people in the shop profusely, and threw away my trash in the nearby dumpster with their permission, of course.
I rolled away into a sleepy downtown Cedar Falls and treated myself to a couple of wonderful tasty creme filled donuts from a place with such a great name I couldn't resist. Hurts Donut.
After consuming two I was drunk on sugar and I left the streets and jumped on the path. I grabbed a bunch of groceries at the enormous Hy Vee grocery store extravaganza near my hotel and tried to check in but the room wasn't ready even though it was 30 minutes after check in time. They asked if I could give them 30 minutes so I obliged, grudgingly. I stepped outside and it began to rain lightly. I found a park in a nearby neighborhood with a covered picnic table, and waited it out till 4. I found my room after walking all around the perimeter of the hotel and found that it still wasn't ready. It was close though and I told the cleaning lady who was working on it that it was good enough and thanked her and she was happy to be done with it I think. This was an extremely cheap room, I guess you get what you pay for but it's not that bad, pretty clean and quiet.
