It was all quiet by the I&M canal and Illinois River last night. I was the only one camping there which made for a peaceful night. I had a raccoon visit my nearby trash can and check out my bike and after I ran him off a couple times he left me alone.
Heavy fog was predicted but I never saw any at all, and sunrise was pretty over the river. I rolled up to the town of Channahon. I had to divert around a trail bridge under construction right next to an old lock keeper's house. I got back on track with minimal fuss.
The weather was terrific, sunny skies and calm wind. I had to ride some side streets in Joliet which was painless, even though I had to divert around another bridge closure, I found my way easily and the streets were very low stress and hardly any traffic. I started the Old Plank Road trail and was glad to turn off my brain. Until I had to cross a road. The road crossings on these trails today were high speed with no warning lights and nobody in Illinois cares about stopping for people in a crosswalk. I had to be very defensive all day, and a lot of the crossings were scary even for me, and I would say I am pretty good at accelerating from a stop to race across an intersection. I have no idea what they expect disabled people to do. Hope that people have the good will to stop I guess.
After the first half of the ride the southeast wind picked up. I crossed into Indiana on a Greenway and there was a nice big sign and bricks marking the state line. I made it to my hotel a bit early but was able to go ahead and check in. Soon after the rain caught up so I got here at the right time. Lucky today but the front stalls out here the next couple days. At least I don't have to worry about the severe weather and flooding in that this front is producing in Texas.
