It was very quiet all night last night so I slept pretty good. I slept in a little past sunrise and took my time a bit getting going. The riding was fantastic. Pretty much a road cycling paradise. Everything was paved except one half mile section today. Very narrow and ridiculously curvy and undulating. The roads are basically never straight or flat, ever. The only straight roads were the highways. And even US 25 was pretty hilly and curvy. And actually tolerable traffic on the parts I rode today. The back roads were just barely wide enough for a car and a bicycle, with less than 3 feet. People generally gave me as much room as they could and slowed way down. But I didn't see that much traffic till later in the ride.
I decided to check out the Ark Encounter when planning my way through Kentucky the second time. It was pretty close to where I was going anyway. I decided to stick close to the I-75 corridor for hopefully more stores and towns than in the eastern extreme. It's quite pricey but I really wanted to check it out in person. You buy a pass, and pay for parking (they didn't charge me of course, and let me put my bike in their overflow ticket building), and then take a bus to the Ark. It's not that far really but i guess they figured it would be easier to secure and keep the riff raff away from the attractions. Also they have a more captive audience to stay there and keep spending money.
I figured it was appropriate to listen to the first cd I ever bought, of the christian hard rock band Bride, Kentucky natives, while on the bus and walking to the Ark. The parking lots were not even a third full but it was still a bit tight inside the Ark. I'd guess only about 5% of people wore masks inside. Most were retirement age. I made a quick walkthrough and enjoyed admiring the woodwork and the impressive achievement of just building the thing. Pretty cool. I actually got back to my bike way before I thought I would, and set off to ride the rest of the way to my campsite for the day.
The roads were relentlessly hilly still. The total elevation wasn't extreme but so many hills were over 12%, it was silly. The end was worse though, as I approached Lexington the terrain flattened out and the pastures opened up and my windbreaks of trees and steep hills disappeared. So my headwind was more of a factor. I rode a very nerve wracking busy road for a few miles and really rode hard to get it over with as fast as possible, and that left me drained once I finally got off. I was buzzed for the first time I can remember. I actually knew it was coming and would have gotten off the road but there was only a 4 foot straight drop off to a ditch. No shoulder.
But that was the only scary road and it was over soon. I soft pedaled the remaining miles into the park, which mercifully had some food at the campground store, I had nothing, as I had only passed gas stations all day and also pretty much skipped lunch. It didn't have much but it saved a few miles of riding to the nearest store. It's a nice park, pricey but I got an outlet to charge stuff and I am somewhat protected from the wind, am upwind of everyone, and it's far enough away from the interstate that it's not a problem. People nearby seem like the quiet types but we will see.
