I slept like a log for a few hours after I turned in for the night when the campground finally shut up and people stopped driving around, around 10. I woke naturally and turned over. And then heard a loud dump truck zoom past near me and then grab the nearby dumpster and loudly empty it. At 4am! If that wasn't enough, the RV nearest me left in their vehicle, came back and proceeded to slam doors and generally make a ruckus for 30 minutes or so. I was already anxious about the high winds today, and wanted to get an early start. I wanted to leave but since I lost my good headlight I started with, I only have a much crappier one I bought from a Walmart. I didn't think it would last till sunrise. So I laid back down and eventually got some decent sleep. I woke again at 6:25 and quickly got going well before sunrise.
The wind was already kicking up as I rode the Legacy trail towards Lexington. It was very nice to be off the roads and avoid commuter traffic before dawn. I was very impressed that they let the trail stay open despite some nearby construction, very nice because it was a very crucial segment that would have been hard to detour. Lexington was really cool, and the riding was actually pretty good. I went and visited the cemetery to see the largest American Basswood tree on earth, right next to the huge monument to Henry Clay, a famous senator from Kentucky in the 1800s.
Leaving town was painless and the traffic died to a safe level after a Kroger and after I lost my bike lane. I rode beside huge horse farms and battled the wind some more. A few miles of undulating terrain on narrow roads took me to the Tate's Creek road ferry over the Kentucky river. I've never been on a ferry before and it was really cool. It's a totally free service of the Kentucky DOT. I just got on, enjoyed a nice short boat ride and rolled off. No fuss. Three cars fit just behind me. I let them go when I found a pull off and enjoyed no traffic. Turned off to a side road which was a long 15% grind back to the top of a ridge.
The wind was relentless, and the hills were constant all day. I was very surprised that the road from the interstate all the way to the college in Berea had a bike path beside it for the whole way. It was strange seeing students everywhere on the sidewalks as I rode through a little after noon. The road went straight into the hills right after town. I saw a big colony of kudzu, and it made me smile, back in the south again. The whole way through from Berea to Mount Vernon was beautiful, and I even had about two miles of gravel. And inadvertently I followed US bicycle route 21. The weather was cloudy from late morning on, and it did try to sprinkle once but otherwise was dry. I decided to get a cheap hotel near the interstate for a bit of rest and a shower. Only a few minutes after I got to my room, a strong line of thunderstorms caught up and blew through fast. I looked at the radar and just south of here the storm showed rotation and a warning was issued, 60mph winds. But it moved through quickly and it's pretty nice out now.
