Thanks Jeremy! 😕
Many lessons learned - like maybe trying to do a century after DST when you’re not starting early enough is a bad idea.
Jeremy made a Coast Ride training ride call. I was waiting to hear back from Sonny about where he wanted to ride today and when I didn't, I decided to join this ride. I was both wary of being able to finish before sunset but more importantly, I wasn't sure I would be able to keep up.
I got to Pleasanton BART early but no one was around. I messaged Jeremy and then finally called him to find out that he had canceled the ride because everyone bailed. He didn't cancel the ride call though. I didn't say I was going either.
While I was on the phone with Jeremy, Sean rolled up. We weren't sure what to do so we just decided to do the ride and decide at the top of Mt. Hamilton whether to do an out-n-back or the full ride.
We took it pretty easy at the start and the day warmed up pretty quickly. The original plan was to go to In-N-Out at the end so I brought plenty of food and was eating pretty regularly.
We got to the base of Mt. Hamilton about an hour after I expected. On the way I was already starting to feel tired and hungry even though I felt like I was eating more than usual. I saw Robin and Dave coming down on our way up. Sean also got a flat around halfway up.
About 4 miles from the top, I started to feel like I might bonk. It was also around the same time Robin and Dave flew passed us on their LKHC attempt.
I made it to the top without bonking. I didn't feel like eating my bar at all. Everything was too sweat. I needed salt. I needed a burger and fries.
Mt. Hamilton happened to be pretty much exactly halfway so it was a toss up as to which way to return. I think the smart move would've been to go back the way we came but Sean really wasn't looking forward to climbing Calaveras and was interesting in seeing Mines since it was new.
Well we started descending at about 2:45p. Even if we didn't stop at The Junction for much needed food, we still wouldn't have made it back by sunset.
The descent was fun but cold. Luckily it was warm when we got to the bottom. Really it was surprisingly warm all the way to The Junction. A lot of the evidence of the fires had disappeared with grass covering most of the blackened ground. Some patches of burned trees were the only reminder of what happened.
We were pretty stoked to get there but it was right around 4p. They told us it would be 30 min. if we wanted a burger, 15 min. if we wanted fries. Given the wait and the time to eat, that would mean leaving at sunset but we figured the food would be worth it.
The burger and fries were good but they would've been better if they were hot - they were just lukewarm. The best thing was the pickle for sure.
We left The Junction just after sunset and did the last 40 miles in the dark. It started off cold but we quickly warmed up. I think that was the last time we were warm. After our first descent, there were some warm pockets, but overall it was cold. The closer we got to Livermore, the colder it got and at one point I started to shiver. I only had a vest and arm warmers. I'm glad I brought some full finger gloves but really, I needed a jacket to stop the windchill. Some knee or leg warmers and toe covers would've been good too.
Mines was actually a lot of fun in the dark with only the cold ruining it.
We were so psyched to make it back to Pleasanton BART. We may have been a little delirious.
