Just a lovely winter’s day - the way it’s supposed to be. Mild, sunny, and clear blue skies.
I didn't really know where to ride today and Bob suggested doing the CCW SF loop that Peter had suggested to him. Sounded like an interesting idea and just the right amount of riding for the time available (we got back ~30 min. before sunset).
The day started off really gray and most of the ride up to SF we could see blue skies on the horizon around us but never quite where we were.
I routed us on Tunnel Rd. to avoid some Bayshore climbing and also because I've never done it before. It ended up being pretty good. When we got to the Brisbane Lagoon, I was wondering why there were so many cars on Lagoon Rd. I couldn't tell if they were parked or if that was traffic. Turns out it was traffic. All the lanes of southbound 101 were stopped and an ambulance was going through with it's sirens on. It must have been some accident.
Once we got back onto Bayshore, the sun was pretty much out and the city was looking gorgeous. The sky was so clear and blue - no haze.
On the Embarcadero, we were supposed to be on the bike path but there were too many people so I opted for the bike lane instead. There's a section of two way bike lane at the south end of the Embarcadero. At one point a group of cyclists came off the path on to the bike lane, across our path, to go south. They were far enough ahead that they were out of our way but I saw a straggler still on the path that needed to catch up to the group. I slowed down but it looked like he saw us and wasn't going to get into the bike lane so I continued but right as I approached him, the idiot rode off the path right in front of me. I yelled and he managed to stop and stay next to the curb and I was able to stop and avoid him as well. I guess he didn't really look like I thought he did.
I wasn't really sure where to have lunch and the only place that I could think of that was sort of on the route was Golden Boy Pizza. I order two slices but one might have been enough size it was practically the size of two slices that I'm used to. It was nice that the sun was out and there was no breeze. It actually felt really warm when were standing around. When were moving the wind chill made it feel a lot cooler.
Doing this loop CCW means the majority of the climbing is backloaded. I was feeling good but Bob's legs were starting to feel it around the Presidio which is really before the significant climbing starts. Despite feeling tired, he was climbing pretty well.
Most of the climb back was in the shade and it was starting to feel cooler. By the time we got to Sawyer Camp Trail, it was cold. I'm not sure if the north end of the trail got any sun today.
I think this loop works better CW but I got to show Bob some new stuff and all in all it was a great day.
