At last, virtually the whole of my journey through Spain had been long distances and wet, but today I only had 40 miles to ride, the weather was much better (even dry) and I would reach France.
From San Sebastian to Irun the cycle routes start good but there is a gap and a hill in between. You can stay on smaller roads until you reach about 2 miles short of Irun at which point it's difficult not to hit the main road which I did, but it is a good downhill stretch and the first turn is about 1.5 miles at which point I found quieter roads into Irun and ultimately across the border to Hendaye. From Hendaye its only about 5 miles to St Jean de Luz but the coastline in between is spectacular with huge sedimentary rock formations ... I stopped to take pictures.
From there the road came inland a bit and the ride up to Biarritz wasn't as good as I'd hoped, running parallel with a main road and dead straight it was featureless and a bit boring after the cliffs. But I did reach Biarritz and cycled up to the famous lighthouse taking some pictures of surfers on the way.
Rather than heading east to Bayonne, I stayed on the coast all the way to the mouth of the adour at Anglet where I stopped for lunch at a small seaside beach resort which looked pleasant but quiet as it was early march still. I then folllowed the Adour about 4 miles down to Bayonne.
