I had stayed in a very up market hotel in Bernere en Retz and had an a la carte meal the night before, not out of choice, there just wasn't any other option in town and to be fair the hotel and food was superb. I set off north once more and soon passed through Pornic, I was cycling with trepidation towards the mouth of the river Loire - why trepidation ? The Loire is wide and runs out to sea at St Nazaire which is a french naval base, so the bridge across is very busy and very high. It also features on the Tour De France and the ramps up and down are quiet severe, but the biggest issue is the traffic - there is a cycle lane painted on the road but it is about 2 feet wide and offers little protection. So off I went and to be fair it was very enjoyable, probably because it wasn't too windy as the crosswinds are notorious but mainly because the traffic was light being a Sunday. At 40 miles I decided to stop in a nice village called Ferol as I passed a nice looking cafe called a cafe de la place where I ordered a beer and asked for some food, but the girl said they only had sweet items and cakes, she told me the boulangerie was about to close but they had sandwiches and I could come back to eat it which I did and promptly bought another beer. After a good hour I set off and headed once again west. I was oon cycling through Vannes and on to Auray where I headed straight down the D768 and down to Carnac where I had cycled to in 2014 and is famous for its alignments of thousands of standing stones.
