Several of the dead end roads near the river were actually gravel which was nice. Discovered and explored a nice doubletrack trall in a subdivision. Residents only but nobody was out on this blustery day so I had it to myself. It got really close to the river which would be cool to revisit and explore again someday.
The mysterious building(on the satellite photos) at the end of New Salem road turned out to be a water pump facility providing water for the city of Griffin. There wasn't anyone there so I was able to go around it and get a very good view of the Flint river. There was a bit of doubletrack nearby that may have led down the river but I didn't check it out, figured i'd save it for another time. It's pretty obvious that New Salem road was the former routing of GA 92 and while it was paved(in that section, everywhere else it's gravel) it was in pretty poor shape and gets so little use it's effectively single lane again with the collected leaves and pinestraw accumulation on the sides.
Vaughn road which is normally sorta busy was pleasantly almost car free because it's closed for a new bridge over Shoal creek. The little community of Vaughn is barely even noteworthy, it has a church, and about 30 houses(maybe) but in the past it must have been a nice little place, as it was the junction of two different railroads, both now abandoned.
On the way south from PTC as soon as I turned onto 74 from Brechin Dr I spotted a license plate near the shoulder, which I made a mental note of for grabbing on some other shorter ride. But I ultimately decided to just come back the way I came, because the sun was at a bad angle and I figured i'd rather do Rising Starr and go through Starrs Mill again vs busy 85 plus Bernhard. So I swung around and went ahead and grabbed the plate.
I overdressed a bit for the temperature but with the relentless biting wind it wasn't too unbearable.
