Another beautiful, gravelly, day on the bike in Marin. Tom and Dan P. were replaced by Colin and Dan G. decided to take the day off after yesterday.
Everyone said they were pretty tired after yesterday, myself included. I wasn't sure how they would feel. Surprisingly good. It helped that today's pace was much slower.
The benefits of riding midweek - no one was around. I can't remember the last time I got to descend Panoramic Hwy from Pantoll down to Stinson Beach without cars (slowing me down).
Once we got over to Dias Ridge, we found some serious ruts and trail water damage. Coastal Fire Rd. in Tennessee Valley had a rut deep enough to swallow me whole if I stood in it. Miwok had pretty bad ruts too. Old Springs was surprisingly smooth. Not sure if it had work down on it. It would be amazing if the rains helped to smooth the trail like that.
The trails were pretty rough and punishing. Richard decided to head back on Shoreline Hwy at the top of Dias. Colin left us at Tennessee Valley.
That left Elton, Craig, and I to do more climbing. First we did Battery Townsley the hard way with a little detour to the Labyrinth. Then we climbed Coastal where Craig had a little bonk.
Today we didn't stop for lunch. I was smart and had a pastry at Equator before the start of the ride (after I had a breakfast sandwich at Andytown) and I grabbed some pumpkin loaf for the ride. Definitely saved me.
It wasn't until the end that I started to sort of get hungry but I was actually surprisingly okay. We had to climb back up to the house as well and I know I'm in trouble when all I can muster is 130-140W but I was still doing over 200W.
It was slightly warmer than yesterday and mostly I think I dressed correctly. It got cold toward the end and putting some layers back on instantly gave me more energy.
We went to Playa for dinner and I gorged myself. It was a good day.
