All the Skratch mix I had in ziplock bags shook open and got everywhere in my bar bag.
We knew we wanted to do Bolinas Ridge today but it took a lot of discussion to figure out the route last night. Everyone was pretty tired from the last couple of days of riding.
I really wanted to ride my XC MTB but given all the road we had to do on the way back and Craig being such a strong mofo, I knew I wouldn't be able to keep up with my tired legs.
Well I regret not riding it because the north end of Bolinas Ridge, passed Shafter Grade, was WAY bumpier than the last time I rode it. We opted not to do Shafter because Craig was only on file tread tires and not used to CA gravel. Worse still, right before Shafter, his front brake was pretty squishy. I suspect he boiled the fluid on the early part of the trail.
Had I known how bumpy it was going to be I would've ridden the Epic EVO. It would've been worth it. Either that or say, "Sorry Craig. We're going down Shafter (without a front brake).
It ended up being overcast most of the day and it was colder than the original forecast earlier in the week.
The first part of the ride was pretty nice and although my legs were tired, they actually felt better than the day before. I'd call that a win.
There were some guys between Elton and Craig when we were going through the redwoods section of Bolinas Ridge. He thought it was us on his tail so he was hammering. Meanwhile I had stopped to get photos and was trying my hardest to catch back up to tell them to slow down. I couldn't believe we were going to race through the trees instead of enjoying them so I slowed down myself. Eventually they stopped and we went through at a more leisurely pace.
I gotta say, Craig did really well on all of it considering his tire and brake situation and being relatively knew to this kind of terrain. He kept up great.
We opted to skip Jewel since it was steeper and bumpy and did the rest of the trail north to the road. I'd never done it before and it was pretty nice.
Craig managed to make it through Bolinas Ridge unscathed only to crash on the Cross Marin Trail bike path ironically. We were talking and he veered off the path into the grass reach for his douche cape and ended up hitting the pavement on his butt. Luckily no serious injury.
After slogging through the road miles with a headwind we stopped at Way Station for a burger and tater tots while Elton rolled home.
Pretty great day today and a great week overall.
