This has happened to us a lot. We unintentionally do the same rides over again on almost the exact same weekend as previous times. Today, we did it on the exact same date the first time we rode it in 2016. We're like a Cyclist's Almanac!
Unfortunately, there really wasn't very much redeeming about this ride. I wanted to go, hoping to see some wildflowers and dragged Bob along.
There didn't end up being very many wildflowers. The hills were turning brown. Del Puerto Canyon, the road, was more beat up than before. Lots of evidence of the fire from all the blackened trees. Starting from before we got to The Junction, it was headwind and it just got worse as the day went on. I got a flat tire from a small piece of wire right before getting to Patterson - the first one in ages! I never would've gotten the flat if I was running my tubeless tires, which I get tomorrow. The current wheels are also not aero like the new wheels are. It certainly didn't help in the headwinds. At one point on Del Puerto Canyon, I was doing 200W to ride into the headwind while Bob was only needing 140W. What the heck!
Just after Mines Rd. forks from Del Valle Rd., Bob discovered his front derailleur wasn't shifting the front chainrings. We decided to continue on and it eventually started working again. It probably got gunked up after getting cleaned from riding the Solvang Double in the rain.
Things that went well. I think we ate pretty well. We had lunch at The Junction. I also downed a Gatorade there. Then in Patterson, we stopped for water where I downed another Gatorade. Half way to Tracy we stopped at a convenience store for ice cream and more water. Then just after Tracy, after battling the headwinds for a good 50 miles, I stopped for some corn dogs and Bob got a burrito. I didn't know he was going to stop for food too otherwise I would've gotten a burrito or a hot dog instead. Something with more substance anyway.
Bob had heard about this spot where you could get spring water of the side of the road in Del Puerto Canyon - Adobe Springs Rd. We met a guy that drove up from San Jose for the water which he claimed was the best. He'd be driving up for years because the high magnesium content has many positive effects apparently.
Bob was crushing it on his pulls north from Patterson. He was averaging a few mph more than when I was pulling. But the food really helped me and I was able to do some pulls through Altamont, where the sun set on this.
I was very glad I brought lights and layers because we definitely needed them for the end.
I'll chalk this ride up as a hard training ride. Rather than ride in the unrelenting headwind for around 70 miles, I would've rather climbed 10K of elevation.
