Glad I put on some extra layers. I made good use of the long sleeve jersey and knee warmers I picked up at West End Bikes a couple days earlier. Good route, but no doubt someone with more local knowledge would have found ways to avoid St. Helenes Rd. and Barbur Blvd., which have large shoulders but cars move at freeway speeds.
If you take this route, BE CAREFUL descending from Skyline to St. Helenes Rd. on Newberry Rd. It is steep and curvy. I needed to really pull on the breaks to slowdown in order to negotiate some of the curves. If the pavement had been wet--which it will often be in Portland--I probably would have wiped out.
Highlights from the ride included: Nice views of Mt. St. Helenes from Sauvie Island; Peaking cherry blossoms on the Portland Waterfront; passed by the location of my first economic consulting job--the house has seen better days.
