Zack was going to do this ride on Friday but I already had plans. When he said he could do it Saturday, that worked out great for me because that gave me a reason to head down to Sea Otter so I could see Randall.
Zack wanted to do this ride early though so he could make it back for a social ride at Sea Otter happening around lunch (more on that later) so I got up super early to make it down.
On the drive down, it looked like it might be foggy but luckily it was clear. Unfortunately, it was really windy. I couldn't decide how to dress because it was warm without the wind. In the end I dressed for the wind and initially regretted it as I got hot and sweaty during the climb but the following descent was very cold.
I've been so busy planning rides this week that I didn't really look at the ride profile. All the climbing was around 12-13% and they were decently long. Old Coast Rd. itself was gorgeous with pockets of redwoods.
As I had heard, the road was pretty rocky so I was very glad I rode the Epic EVO. It was also the better bike for Sea Otter/Fort Ord later as well.
Once we got to the end, we got such a great payoff from Bixby Creek Bridge. We stopped to take so many photos and videos.
While the headwind on Old Coast Rd. sucked, it turned into an awesome tailwind back down Hwy 1. which made riding the MTB not suck at all.
We found a trail at Andrew Molera SP and did a little adventuring and still managed to get back to Sea Otter in time for the social ride... just!
So one problem was I had McDonald's for breakfast in Seaside at 6:30a and then didn't eat anything for lunch and rolled right into the Ice Cream ride. Surprisingly, I didn't bonk and wasn't even that hungry on the drive home. I did eat two ice cream bars, a Kind bar, and some watermelon during the ice cream stop though.
