More drama and adventure! Day 7 was fantastic, we rolled out of Tropic and climbed most of the day through Bruce Canyon NP and many miles on the Great Western Trail. We pitched camp at 10,200ft and then rode our bikes 7 each way to Powell Point which has got to be one of the world’s greatest views. Words can’t do it justice. Today started full of promise and we spent almost the entire day above 10,000ft. Beautiful views of the various levels of plateaux far below, and long stretches of singletrack through pine and aspen forests. BUT, the great western trail deteriorated with endless blowdowns and lots of totally unrideable sections: we did about 25km in nearly six hours (QE hours total ride time today) and we WORKED for it. First time spirits were flagging on the trail, and to make matters worse Henric broke the pivot bolt on his bike and is done, until he can get his bike repaired and hopefully rejoin us later on the route. We realized we were falling irretrievably behind schedule and exited the trail onto a forest service road for a STUNNING 27km descent to the sleepy town of Escalante where we got pizza, beer and rooms in a rundown old motel. Tomorrow we will head for Boulder and get back on track and on trail. All is well! What a great bunch of guys this is.
