[Written 7 weeks late.] Impromptu clinic-stress-induced long weekend mini-vacation to OBX, coupled w/ Holly's doctors appointments @ Duke for which we got to Durham on Thurs. PM & dry-camped there, in a Cracker Barrel lot to get a good breakfast the next morning, then took the RV to Rodanthe on Hatteras Island Fri. PM. Impromptu Tropical Storm Colin developed over Myrtle/SC area during the 24-48 hrs leading up to our arrival that even I as a weather-geek didn't hear tell of through Wed. Impromptu rain & wind bands limiting outdoor time & Katy's beach time on Sat. & Sun. Impromptu food-borne illness right after we tried the almost-only close-by seafood restaurant we got take-out from on Fri. PM, so I was tethered to the RV instead of the clinic through Sat. & Sun. Impromptu extra day that Holly tacked on after extending the RV park stay by 1 day & not have to fight the traffic for the 4th, and clear/rearrange my appointment calendar for Tues. So finally dry roads & GI tract somewhat undistressed for an impromptu ride on Mon. Impromptu decision to turn L out of the park and head S to see Hatteras Light (several snakes there, including a water moccasin that showed me a glimpse of his cottony mouth before he slithered away from the lighthouse entrance road into the undergrowth before I could get the phone out). Then went further S past the lighthouse all the way on down to the ferry over to Ocracoke Island. Never been that far S till today. Smoked it on the way south w/ tailwind mostly, much slower into the head wind & somewhat tired for the return trip. So when I reached the RV park I just turned in & went home. Had planned on also going N on Rt. 12 after south down to the Lighthouse, to try out the new (we hadn't been over it yet since it was finished a couple years ago, since we had taken the RV down to Myrtle or Emerald Isle) bridge over Oregon Inlet. Looks like fun and the only "hill" in these parts, & a good view from the top. Next time we are here perhaps.
