8 of us headed out of Uxbridge but I did pretty well to shake off 2 before elevenses. We took a slight detour to admire a door frame Crazy Alan was building. Then up into Iver and though the overgrown track by the Red Lion. Manoeuvring carefully to avoid the dog poo, broken glass, overgrown brambles and stinging nettles we arrived at the other end as it started to rain. Unfortunately, the rain was set in for the day.
As David was sporting his Pukka Pie cycling top I will enthral you with some Pukka Pie trivia. The company was founded in 1963, employs 262 people and produces 180,000 pies and pasties per day. The most popular flavour is Steak and Kidney (my least favourite as it happens). Rotherham United's supporters hold the record for the most pies consumed at a football match, with a consumption 40% above the Football League average. In 2009 the company sponsored the UK Snooker Championship, and the winner, China's Ding Junhui, was awarded his body weight in meat pies, 276 to match his 69 kg weight!
Anyway a pretty uneventful ride to lunch at the White Hart, Chalfont St Giles where the short ride were already ensconced eating their lunches. They finished before us but the service was very prompt so we were all ready to leave at the same time. I exchanged two riders for Phil the Wheel, and proceeded to take a circuitous and rather hilly route to Rickmansworth Golf Course, thanks to Lawrie who had very kindly worked out the routes for both Alec and me.
I was looking forward to hot bread and butter pudding with custard which I’d had on my last visit to the golf course, but todays special was Summer Pudding with Clotted Cream. “OK that will have to do” I said, much to Johns dismay when he discovered I’d had the last one. Then my own dismay when 10 minutes later I was refunded my money as something untoward had happened to the pudding in the kitchen.
Puddingless we all climbed up Woodcock Hill to Harefield (we don’t wimp out like those Medium Riders!), where we were greeted by Harefield Alan who’d just past us in the car. We started dispersing from then on and I was on my own (and it had finally stopped raining) by the time I’d reached the bottom of Broken Gate Lane.
