FRIDAY
Fifteen of us gathered on a blustery, damp morning to for the overnight trip to Streatley Youth Hostel. Sixteen, two groups of eight, actually left Uxbridge as Brian L accompanied us to elevenses at Bourne End Garden Centre which was reached via Pinewood, Burnham Beaches and Hedsor. En route the sky's brightened and the day remained bright if blustery.
After refreshments we bid goodbye to Brian and headed into a strong headwind through Marlow to lunch at Henley stopping at Hambedon Mill to see the River Thames in full spate - it was impressive. Lunch was had at The Catherine Wheel, a Wetherspoons Hotel.
Leaving Henley the route was up, in height, past Grey's Court to Stoke Row where we stopped to admire The Maharaja's Well, paid for by Maharajah of Benares in recognition of work carried out in his Indian community by the local squire.
The ride continued on through Checkendon and Woodcote before dropping down to Goring and over the river to Streatley and the Youth Hostel for a lovely cup of tea made by the fair Sandra.
The hostel staff supplied a fine meal in the dining room which was followed by a convivial evening in the lounge.
SATURDAY
After a good night's sleep and a fine breakfast we loaded the bikes and again set off in two groups for the return journey. The wind had dropped and the weather looked set fair.
We pedalled along the A329 to Pangbourne then A340 along the Pang Valley to Theale in the Kennet Valley. From Theal we were back on quieter roads though Sheffield Bottom, Burghfied, and Swallowfield to elevenses at Arborfield Garden Centre.
After elevenses we made our way through Winnersh, Hurst, and Shurlock Row to Drift Lane which was followed to the turnoff for Fifield. From Fifield it was a short cycle to The Black Horse at Dedworth, our lunch stop.
Replete we made our way through Clewer, Windsor , and Eton, across Upton Park to Langley with the group dispersing along the way.
A great two days cycling made all the better by the company.
