A Tour de Aftermath, only a positive one to look at how the South Bay Reservoirs are doing (Bob's idea). Answer - they're super full!
Earlier in the week I ate something that wrecked me. I was feeling weak and achy. I wasn't 100% sure if I'd recovered enough for today's ride but it turned out I was fine. Sonny and Bob ended up being the ones struggling a little (during the 2nd half of the ride with the headwinds and hunger).
Uvas Reservoir was at the tippy top of the banks and looked like it was close to being too full. I think Coyote Lake had been pretty empty but is full now. Didn't get to check out Anderson Lake like we'd hoped as the reservoir is closed for construction. They were letting out a torrent of water as run-off though.
At one point before Coyote Lake we passed a ranch with animals and a dad and an infant petting one of the animals. Sonny asked Bob, "Were those llamas?" Me, "No. They were donkeys!" :) Bob hadn't seen them.
The Gilroy Hot Springs loop is so pretty and peaceful. I'd do it more often if it wasn't so far away.
After the loop, on the way to lunch we hit stronger than forecast headwinds. The guys were hungry at that point. I'd been worried about eating and I don't know if that's why I wasn't really hungry or that so many of my recent rides, I haven't been able to eat lunch until 3p, or because I was really taking it easy on the ride, or probably a combo of all of the above.
After lunch Bob told us all to take it easy but then he proceeded to ride at pretty brisk pace and drop Sonny. Then on our first climb, Sonny said he was starting to cramp near the top of it. At first I thought he was just saying that like he's done in the past but when I looked over, I could tell he was cramping. So I went along side him and pushed him the final 30 or so feet to the top.
After that we really brought the pace down and tootled the rest of the way back.
The day never really warmed up that much, I think thanks to the wind chill. It was freezing to start and I put on a jacket that I predicted I'd want to take off after 10 minutes of riding... which I did and never needed again after. I also never ended up taking off any layers like I thought I would.
