Not quite the triumphant redemption ride I had envisioned. Many parts of Coyote Creek Trail were completely flooded and closed causing us to back track and detour three times. At that point we were already starving and really looking forward to lunch at Chick N' Bros.
Then there was the nightmare of getting through San Jose. Because of the detours, and I hate this about the Garmin's navigation, the route got recalculated and wasn't the one I had routed. We were on very unfriendly roads. It didn't help that Chick N' Bros was parked on busy Stevens Creek Blvd. A terrible spot.
They had jacked up the prices and served us cold fries. I don't even like their fries to begin with but wanted the carbs. They serve seasoned fries which are my least favorite style probably. I wanted to go back to the them to complain but my hands were too messy and I was too tired. I was pretty sure if I went back, I'd loose it on them.
Not being able to do this ride on Saturday also had a domino effect that messed up a bunch of our other plans so the ride already started off on the wrong foot.
Mt. Umunhum, the climb, ended up being not as bad as Melinda thought it was going to be. Everyone had talked up how steep it was, and it is, but it took us less time to get to the top than she thought. In fact, we got up there right around when I thought we would.
It was also very cold at the top. All because of the wind chill which just made the ride overall, colder than I had expected it to be. I brought enough clothes but I dressed thinking I was going to be taking off my layers. In reality, I really didn't take any off.
On the climb up, I noticed a bit of a tailwind but on the way down, we realized it was much stronger than we knew. It was a pretty bad headwind down and until we got to McKean where it turned back into a tailwind. For some reason, on Coyote Creek Trail, the headwind wasn't bad or any other part of the ride really.
The trails that we got to ride were gorgeous. Most of the ride was, it was really just the section of San Jose between Coyote Creek Trail and Los Gatos Creek Trail that was terrible.
We ended up having sunny and clear skies for all the peaks, with beautiful views of lush green hillsides and blooming flowers.
Oh and as we went up Bailey, a group of guys came up behind us fast. Just as we got to the top, they swept passed and I recognized the first rider - Chris Riekert.
