Another beautiful day for a commute!
The day started off great. Had an awesome breakfast date with the kiddo. I'd been looking forward to it since last week when I realized that today was a staff development and senior project presentation day. I'd asked her if she wanted to join me late Friday, last week, afternoon and said yes!
We had a great time chatting and talking about her presentation later that morning. She was super nervous despite this being the second time she was giving this presentation. The first time was for her English class and she scored a 98% that time. I tried to reassure her that she had nothing to worry about. I learned later in the day that she did great and scored an 88%. Not bad at all considering this presentation/project was a requirement for her graduation.
After breakfast I decided to pick up a couple Wandrer miles in a small neighborhood east of Pecos. While rolling through the neighborhoods I spotted Jennifer Smith walking her dog. Sadly she didn't put it on Strava so it didn't happen. Sorry Jen, the rules are the rules!
Was rolling great until I passed through Maryland Pkwy. I ride over a some type of trench patch hard. I've ridden over this patch several times before without issue. Today was something else and even said to myself, "Dang I'm hitting everything today." Shortly there after I realized I'd flatted the rear only 3-4 blocks from work! Argh! I pulled up a nice piece of sidewalk and got my tube swapped out.
While I was working a gentleman from across the street hollers at me asking if I'm ok. He offered tools, tubes, and patches. I replied that I'm good and kept working. It was a wonderful gesture!
Rolled in to the office without further incident. I did set about checking out my flatted tube and patching it. I keep a floor pump, spare tube, spare CO2s, and patch kit at the office for exactly this situation. I added some air to the flatted tube and quickly found the telltale sign of a pinch flat. Two punctures right next to one another, but one was significantly larger than the other. I went ahead and patched it up, added some air, and set it aside while I went to enjoy a nice lunch outdoors while reading a book.
After lunch I checked the tube and it appeared to be holding so I reinstalled it back into the rear. I placed the unpatched good tube back into my on-bike repair kit. Also made sure to add a new CO2. Thankfully all that work and I made it home safe and sound and ready for a group ride tomorrow!
