Oh, yes!! This is the kind of ride that long summer days are for! Progress was slow at first — I even had to deal with a fall — but I ended up meeting my goal! Along the way, I was motivated by the prospect of setting up camp before nightfall at an epic location, taking a warm shower, and enjoying a more relaxing recovery day tomorrow. (My stay in Tenino was strictly an in-and-out experience. I woke up super early to a whistling train, dogs barking, and a rooster calling.)
It was liberating to just ride without any complex navigation today. No more "148 Ave Ct NE" street names. Just WA6 and US101, and some details to fill in intuitively.
The endless rolling hills on US101 make great interval training. Somewhere near the 175 km mark, I seem to have discovered or acquired an ability to gradually gain momentum on long shallow climbs, like a freight train. Maybe it's something I ate? Can't say.
Once I entered Oregon, I was really on a roll. I declined every suggestion to take a cyclist-friendly side loop, and I only made two very brief stops, for selfies.
The Oregon coastal bike route, even though it purports to be cyclist friendly, is not for the faint of heart. Two long bridges and a tunnel have narrow shoulders to ride on.
Oregon state parks are very camper friendly. When I rolled up to Nehalem Bay campground, the sign said "No vacancy", but if you show up to a hiker/biker campsite with no vehicle, they will find some way to accommodate you. Try doing that with BC Parks? You have to fight for a reservation for an exact date months in advance, pay more, and get worse facilities.
