This epic long ride started with redwoods and ended in redwoods. I set out into the misty drizzle, and soon after exiting Crescent City, started the climb into the Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. Around Arcata, I exited the highway and followed the bike route. In hindsight, I'm not sure that taking the zigzags on rectilinear bumpy/patchy backroads through windy plains was an efficient use of time. After Eureka, US101 mostly turns into a freeway. Though riding next to zippy cars was less pleasant, I got to zip along pretty quickly too. I ended the day going through the famous Avenue of the Giants, a scenic route which goes through many dense groves of giant California redwoods. The mildly winding road with gentle slopes makes it a bucket-list-worthy ride! Just before dark, I checked into a hiker/biker site at the Burlington campground.
