Nice relaxed start this morning. Helped Joe learn how to use the portable electric air pump we loaned him and hit the road.
On the road to slater, we saw Sharon. We walked through half the town with her chatting about our first RAGBRAI experience. We got Nosh Waffles and Steak and eggs for breakfast then hit the road.
We stopped at a local farm for a "World Record Day" photo op. They had a live band and a big sign we could sign. Iowans are so welcoming.
Next came Madrid. It was too early for lunch, but that's where the ribeye sandwich is today ... so of course we ate lunch there. We ran into someone who saw our New Mexico jersey and said "One of our group spends the winter in Las Cruces". We said, "Is it Sharon?" He looked stunned and we all had a chuckle. Steve thinks Sharon is awesome. So do we!
On the road to Polk City, we decided to get a little speed on. Low and behold, we stumbled upon the Larsons. Ryan Larson is a Zwifr Premier League racer that we have watched. (Yes, we watch Zwift racing, and you should too). His wife races with TFC. Small world.
We got some Kona Ice in Polk City and sat in the shade for a little bit. The roads today have been very fast, and we are gobbling up this short mileage day quickly. More time for Pie!
Ankeny is the next stop. A suburb of Des Moines, it is more populated than most of our route towns. Lots of folks spraying down the riders as we went by. The local kids seemed to be having a grand time soaking us all. We had a root beer float under the shade of a tree. Then we walked down to a local coffee for an iced mocha, a smoothie, and very cold a/c!
Last stretch is to Des Moines. Fast roads made for quick travel. We stopped at the capital for a couple quick photos.
Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert tonight, then off to get some rest. The next two days are the hardest of the week (if you don't count yesterday's optional century miles).
