Wwwhhhaaattt?!? A Sunday ride? What is going on?!
Mark Hyken hit me up on Saturday about the GVC Breakfast Ride and saying it would be a recovery ride. Well figures Joy would show up and toss the idea of a recovery ride right out the window.
Being it was a Sunday ride I chose to drive down to the start versus riding. I'd told the wife I would drive down, do the ride, drive home, and then we'd go out to breakfast like we usually do on Sundays. I did grab a coffee and donut from Starbucks on the way to the start so I wouldn't ride completely fasted. With the way the ride panned out I'm glad I did.
Things started out kinda chill, but then Joy decided to grow a wild hair and by the time we'd turned onto Valley Verde to start north we'd pushed our way to the front. As we cruised across Robindale I gave Joy a little ribbing that she jumped onto John's wheel the minute I slowed down a little. We made our way over to Bermuda and made a stop for a regroup.
I don't know what came over me at this point, but once we started rolling I got out front and stayed there for the remainder of the ride. We made a quick trip down Bermuda and then onto Starr/Raiders Way. Once we stopped at the Chevron on the southwest corner of Volunteer and Via Inspirada, we all talked to John about changing up the route to stay on the roads versus joining the path to get over to Bicentennial Pkwy. Thankfully it was something he was already familiar with and after posing the change to the rest of the group we decided to make it happen.
After another regroup at Anthem Highlands and Democracy we were off for Las Vegas Blvd to Pebble and back to the start. We absolutely flew through the Via Inspirada neighborhood as we made our way to Via Nobila by way of Via Centro. As we rounded the corner onto Las Vegas Blvd things started getting really fun.
Starting down the hill toward Pebble, I made sure the group was together and we started motoring. I was having a blast up front leading the pack, and we caught all the lights from Via Inspirada near Speed Vegas to Cactus green. As we stopped at the light at Cactus, everyone was wearing huge smiles and thought it was the coolest thing. Overall along that stretch we averaged around 28 MPH with a top speed of about 31 MPH.
Things would remain fast for the remainder of the ride back to Pebble Marketplace. Each time we were caught at a light I would try to slowly build up steam while waiting for everyone to get lined up before gradually increasing the pace. I'd like to think it went really well as we didn't drop anyone.
Once we got back to Pebble Marketplace, John and Anna had already set up the GVC breakfast spread. I grabbed several bowls of watermelon and a few other snacks before saying my goodbyes and heading home.
I have to say I have no idea where my strength, power, and endurance came from today. This week was pretty heavy with three commutes worth 118 miles and a century on Saturday. By all accounts I should have been a steaming pile of dog doo, but the opposite was true. Overall it was a great time, and I hope to get out for more Sunday rides.
