Eleven club stalwarts answered the cry of “Medium Riders Away” and sped west in the brisk Spring sunshine. Bucks Golf Club path was not so muddy; Denham village is always a joy; the long uphill incline of Old Rectory Lane was tempered by shafts of sunlight penetrating through the trees; the “private road” with huge houses and annoying bumps was forgiven and so to the Christian ladies at Chalfont St Peter. we were surprised not to find Terry awaiting us ( he might have followed the mis-print to St Giles!) Coffee and delicious cake for £1.20 and good to see Phil looking so well. Lunchtime orders phoned through, the leader exhorted his team to stay on the designated cycle paths (“If they’re kind enough to build them for us, we should use them”) A stiff climb on a narrow segmented footpath brought us to Narcott, thence to Bottrells Lane where we passed two fully garbed bee-keepers – a good swoop down to a difficult crossing over the busy main road and then a hard climb up into Coleshill with a photo stop by Groves Windmill and a chat to the workmen. Huge views over the Chilterns before we plunged down to the busy A413 and the path into old Amersham past the flint almshouses to the Saracen’s Head. Avoiding the funeral party we were quickly served in the garden out of the wind with half the table in sunshine – good food and cracking bitter. A long hard climb post lunch to gain the bumpy pavement path to Little Chalfont. The road surfaces and potholes are becoming a nightmare and none more so than on this stretch – but the huge downhill swoop under the M25 to Maple Cross made up for it ( apart from Stuart narrowly avoiding becoming the bonnet mascot of an oncoming car – entirely his own fault) Jim’s puncture count went up here. An excellent day in excellent company and not a nobby lecture to be heard.
