Fuel EX 9.8. Mix of clouds and hazy sun, cold - low 20's at the start up to near freezing near rides end, no noticeable winds. It was forecasted to be a cloudy day and I was pissed on the ride out as there was a lot of sun shining through which can ruin a freeze/thaw ride.
Fortunately Atwood temps are 4-5 degrees below the weather channel temp readings, many of the trails are in shade and conditions were great right up until the end of the ride when some thaw was becoming apparent in the sunny sections of trail.
I got an early start - 8:30 roll time but that was 1/2 hour later than I planned. Trail conditions were great with lots of crunchy dirt and still plenty of snow and ice. The studded tires worked great, never had a slip, but they are much slower due to heavier weight and higher rolling resistance. Only one other rider out on a fat bike plus several hikers but overall a pretty relaxed place.
I started with 2 trips around the Founders Loop then decided to go directly up to Big Wheel from the trailhead but it had a caution tape blocking access. So I jumped over to the North hard trails which were also in great condition. I figured it would be a shorter ride so I took the Marsh and Prairie trails back up to Big Wheel and this time it was open for business but lots of ice and snow on the berms so very slow going. I finished with a Prairie/Marsh return and another trip around Founders. Then one more trip down to the river and up through the woods on the back way to the trailhead.
Dressed just right for the conditions: Medium LS merino base layer, merino SS tee, Bontrager jacket with pit zips open, Assos bib tights with a jock, 2 layers of wool socks and 2 toe warmers on each foot, Shimano waterproof Winter boots, 2 layers of merino base gloves, Toko lobster claw outers, light gater, poly ear band.
Six days in a row riding since New Years Eve and 158.5 miles. I'll probably rest tomorrow and may get in a local MTB snow ride in on Sunday. Rehydration and lunch at The Hairy Cow - first time there in about a month.
